What’s hiding in your gutters?

Many of us barely give our gutters a second thought until they stop working – and by then it could be too late! Blocked gutters can cause water to back up damaging the fascia board, decking, rafters and even the foundations – leading to damage of the building and the contents inside. To get you thinking about what’s going on in your gutters, we’ve put together a list of the top 5 things we regularly come across and the damage they could be causing.

5. Children’s toys.

All too often we find long forgotten toys lost in gutters. It’s easy to see how this happens – a game of catch gone awry or that Superman action figure whose flying lessons were a little too vigorous. The problems start when drain pipes become blocked by a rogue doll or plastic spider, stopping the flow of water and eventually leading to overflowing and leaking roofs.

4. Tennis Balls

An over enthusiastic whack from a racket could result in a tennis ball being lodged in the gutter. In fact, tennis balls are the perfect size for blocking downpipes and are a serious problem with schools. While It’s all too easy to disregard a lost ball, a leaking roof is much harder to ignore.

3. Plastic Bottles and Rubbish

The odd empty water bottle or crisp packet picked up by the wind and deposited in the gutter could be forgiven, but if rubbish is left to build up it could cause serious problems. As rubbish builds up it creates a denser, more stubborn blockage, especially in the downpipe. Regular gutter cleaning can prevent a much bigger problem further down the line.

2. Moss

Some roofs are prone to continual moss growth and removing this can be damaging, especially using powerful jet washers or chemicals. The problem is that moss on your roof will eventually end up in your gutter and your downpipe which, if left, will cause a blockage. The only solution is regular gutter cleaning and maintenance to ensure the problem doesn’t get out of hand.

1. Leaves

Having leaves blocking your gutters isn’t a problem only experienced in autumn – you should also be keeping  your eye on things in spring and summer. Many people disregard leaf debris after November but leaves, blossom and twigs can still cause damage and blockages. If you want to avoid any problems it’s important to have your gutters cleaned and maintained all-year round and not just when the leaves are falling.
