Open University and Sunderland University Case Study

We have just completed two of our most prestigious contracts, The Open University in Milton Keynes and Sunderland University. Despite being at opposite ends of the country, both of these universities have very close similarities!

Moss & debris on roof and gutter

We have been carrying out gutter cleaning jobs to both campuses for the past ten years. Traditionally, both contracts start just before Christmas and continue into the New Year, albeit for different reasons. The Open University campus has a lot of trees, and for this reason, we are required to start gutter cleaning as soon as the leaves have fallen; while Sunderland University has access restrictions to certain buildings at specific times of the year due to exams.

Both contracts require us to use our working at height expertise, as there is a wide variety of buildings. The buildings consist of different types and heights of roofs, from pitched to flat roofs, comprising of steel, brick, slate, asbestos and felt. Some roofs have internal access and or safety wire systems, some which can be accessed with our 16.5m liveried boom van, and others needing specialist hired equipment, such as truck mounted and spider booms.

Due to the volume of buildings and their diverse nature, we endeavour to use the same supervisors for the work, and their knowledge is invaluable for ensuring the gutter cleaning process is carried out smoothly and efficiently.  We are very fortunate that we have a high level of staff retention and that the majority of our workforce has been with us since our inception, which is a testament to the level of service and standards that we can provide.

Each day upon arrival our two-man team are required to report to the on-site estates and facilities personnel to provide a progress report and provide an update on the sequence of works, and over the years we have built a close client relationship. As part of our work, we carry out a brief at height survey of the roofs, and this year at the Sunderland University we carried out minor repair work to some hip tiles, which we had identified as being loose during the gutter cleaning.

Upon completion of the contract, our clients’ receive an extensive number of before and after photographs, together with a written report of our findings for their records.
